Exactly 50 years ago today, Saturday, the 7th of October, over a thousand civilians in Asaba, mostly men, were murdered by soldiers of the Nigerian Army. Though on hearing that the war was approaching the town, many indigenes had fled across the Niger, a good number remained because the town was not part of Biafra, not even on the Biafran map. They were Nigerians, many of whom were professionals and civil servants working in Benin before the war.
In the Nigerian educational system, your ambition is one of those things everyone expects you to figure out for yourself. With little mentoring at every level, most of us just stumble around till we find a place where we excel, fit in or are forced in. Others who don’t, just lie about it.
Lagos for me is a lot like that loud unattractive lover you can’t stand to be around too long, but are enamoured with regardless. The hustle and bustle in this concrete jungle is characterised by the unpleasant smell of what I like to think is the sea, crowds of people at bus-stops, and the constant riotous noise; a mix of blaring horns and shrilling voices. But, it’s Lagos, my place of love.
I landed in Lagos, tried to get an Uber taxi to pick me up. Turns out the driver that took the call was too far away and I had to cancel, costing me N1000. I mean, “somebody cannot make mistake with your service?”
“Aunty, I kept this shoe for you”. “Sister, this bag will fit you”. But is this in your budget? Understand something, these sellers are not your BFF. They are about their hustle and profits. Your financial well-being is not their priority.
