Shawarma, despite being of Eastern Mediterranean origin is a popular meal or snack (depending on your appetite) in major cities in Nigeria.
Before I go any further, please don’t get carried away by the feature image. In my desperate search for the best shawarma Abuja has to offer, I did not find anyone who puts lettuce, onions, or fresh tomatoes in their shawarma to make it look that good.
Based on my research results, it’s safe to say that commercial shawarma in Abuja consists mainly of flatbread, meat (Chicken or Beef), cabbage, Ketchup and Mayonnaise, with additive options. Disregard the mouth-watering images on these companies websites and billboards, what’s actually sold is way less picturesque. So, unlike my doughnuts reviews, taking great pictures on this project has been tough.
With this in mind, I strongly recommend you close your eyes and take a bite because Abuja has some of the tastiest shawarma in this country. With additives like pepper, garlic, sausages and cheese, prepare to be mind-blown. This post is essentially a summary of all the places I have reviewed and I will update it as I go along. Because I prefer to keep posts short, I have a list of places and a link to a detailed account of each of them, and a summary table at the bottom, so you can just scroll down to get the gist of it.
THE LIST
Places I have reviewed include:
Sahad Shawarma

Drumstix Shawarma

AJ’s Shawarma (pending)
THE TABLE
Most shawarma in Abuja are about the same size, offer similar content although fairly customisable, and take approximately the same duration in prep-time. This table is an attempt to highlight the differences.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sahad Shawarma | N1000 | Fair | 1 | None | Service Window | No |
Shawarma King | N1500 | Difficult | 2 | Pepper and Cheese | No Sit-in. Take-away | Yes |
Drumsticks/ Mama Kato | N1400 | Good | 1 | Pepper | Outdoor sitting area | Yes |
Chicken Capitol | N1600 | Good | 2 | Pepper, Cheese and Garlic | In-door sitting area | No |
Do keep in mind that I am no Food Connoisseur, just a fat girl who likes food. This review is based on my personal observation and preference. It is also based on single experiences at stated locations, so your opinion may vary. Finally, this list is in Chronological order and NOT in order of my preference. If you know a great Shawarma place I am missing out, please let me know in the comment section below. In the meantime, please share this with your Shawarma lovers. I’d like to hear what they think.
Great write up. Try Ahmad’s Sharwarma, they are so good.
