If you are reading this, you are probably getting ready for a trip outside the country, perhaps for school, business or pleasure. Either way, you know the importance of having a Nigerian Passport so I will get to the point.
To get a Nigerian Passport you’ll need the following:
For a Standard Green Passport
- Filled Application form
- 2 coloured passport photos
- Birth Certificate or Declaration of Age
- Letter of Identification from your Local Government
- 2 Guarantors form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge
- Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
For a Child or Minor (under 18 years old)
- include a letter of consent from minor’s parents
For an Official Blue Passport include
- Letter of Introduction from your organization
- Letter of Appointment / Last Promotion
Now many sites here will tell you there are 2 ways to get an International Passport in Nigeria;
Online and Offline method and they are right. But as your friend, I will tell you that for now, there is really just one. Let me explain.
With the online method, go to Nigeria Immigration Portal and click the e-Passport application form. You fill the form, print and proceed to online payment. It will amount to about N23,000 (for 32 pages).
You are to print this receipt. After payment, you’ll get a validation number. Using your validation number return to the NIS website and confirm your payment. Finally, print your receipt. (You will need them for your interview).
Despite being simple enough, the problem with this online method is you still have to go to the Immigration office and regardless of your appointment time and date, you will wait for hours. Then you will be sent to confirm your transaction where you will have to join another queue and continue the waiting. In fact, with this method you can spend days waiting to do the biometric capturing.
This is why I strongly recommend the next method.
Here, there are 2 ways. You could use a good travel agent. By good I mean that they can guaranty you a biometric capturing date and new passport within one week. Any longer and they probably don’t know what they are doing. However, passport booklet availability at the passport office can be a limiting factor. Clarify from your agent that passport booklets are available and he can get you your capturing date in less than one week before discussing payment. The average charge is N30,000 for 32 pages.
On the other hand, you can go to the Nigerian Immigration – Passport Office yourself and ask for assistance from a uniformed Immigration Officer. As a Nigerian, you probably already know that these things are better handled in person. Click here to find the Nigeria Immigration office near you.
You will be given a form to fill so go with your pen and all the documents listed above. You will also be expected to pay for your passport there, so go with the required funds and a little extra.
